Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام)

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) Lion of ALLAH was the cousin and son-in-law of Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ). He ruled as the fourth caliph and was first IMAM of the Muslim Ummah. Born to Hazrat Syedina Abu Talib (رضی اللہ) and Bibi Fatimah Bint Asad (رضی اللہ), on 13th Rajab in the year of 599 A.C. Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was the only to have been born in the sacred sanctuary of the Kabah‎ in Makkah Shareef, the holiest place in Islam, Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was the first young male who accepted Islam. After migrating to Madinah Munawwarah, he married Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) daughter Bibi Fatimah Tuz Zahra (عليه السلام). Who is the Queen of all women in Jannah, and ALLAH ( جل جلاله) rewarded Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) with many children, in all of them Hazrat Syedina Imam Hasan (عليه السلام) and Hazrat Syedina Imam Hussain (عليه السلام), they both had played a vital role for Islam. Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) took part in the early caravan raids from Makkah and later in almost all the battles fought by the Muslim community he was the main worrier especially in the Battle of Badar and the battle of Khandaq.


Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali’s (عليه السلام) life began in 610 when he declared Islam at the age of 10, and ended with the Hijra of Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) to Madinah in 622. When Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) reported that he had received a divine revelation, Ali (عليه السلام), then only about ten years old, believed him and professed to Islam.

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was the first male to embrace Islam. Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) announced at invitational events that whoever assisted him in his invitation would become his brother, trustee and successor. Only Ali (عليه السلام) who was thirteen or fourteen years Old stepped forward to help him. This invitation was repeated three times, but Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was the only person who answered Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ). Recognizing. Ali's continual and singular response to his call, Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) declared that Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was his brother inheritor and vice-regent and people must obey him.

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was 22 or 23 years old when he migrated to Madina Munawwara. When Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) was creating bonds of brotherhood among his companions, he selected Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) as his brother For the ten years that Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) led the community in Medina, Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was extremely active in his service as his secretary and deputy, serving in his armies, the bearer of his banner in every battle, leading parties of warriors on raids, and carrying messages and orders As one of Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah’s (ﷺ) lieutenants, Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was a person of authority and standing in the Muslim community.

In 623, Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) told Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) that ALLAH ( جل جلاله) ordered him to give his daughter Bibi Fatimah Tuz Zahra (عليه السلام) to Hazrat Syedna Imam Ali (عليه السلام) in marriage. Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) said to Bibi Fatimah Tuz Zahra (عليه السلام): "I have married you to the dearest of my family to me." This family is glorified by Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) frequently and he declared them as his Ehl al-Bait in events such as Mubahala and hadith like the Hadith of the Event of the Cloak. They were also glorified in the Qur’an as below:

QURAN SURAH AL AHZAB Chapter 33.33

“And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] house hold and to purify you with [extensive] purification”

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) and Bibi Fatimah Tuz Zahra (عليه السلام) have four blessed children, namely:

1. Hazrat Syedina Imam Hasan (عليه السلام).
2. Hazrat Syedina Imam Hussain (عليه السلام).
3. Bibi Syeda Zainab (رضی اللہ).
4. Hazrat Syedina Mohsin (رضی اللہ).

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali’s (عليه السلام) rest of the children from other wives, namely:

1. Bibi Um-E-Kulsum (رضی اللہ).
2. Hazrat Muhammad (رضی اللہ).
3. Hazrat Abbas (رضی اللہ).
4. Hazrat Abdullah (رضی اللہ).
5. Hazrat Hilal (رضی اللہ).
6. Hazrat Abu Muhammad Hanfia (رضی اللہ).
7. Hazrat Abu Bakar (رضی اللہ).
8. Hazrat Umar (رضی اللہ).
9. Hazrat Usman (رضی اللہ).

Ghadeer-E-Khumm:

Huzoor Syedina Rasool Ullah (ﷺ) was returning from his last pilgrimage in 632, Huzoor (ﷺ) made statements about Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) He halted the caravan at Ghadeer-E-Khumm, gathered the returning pilgrims for communal prayer and began to address them. Taking Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) by the hand, he asked of his faithful followers whether he, Muhammad (ﷺ), was not closer to the Believers than they were to themselves, the crowd cried out "It is so, O Apostle of ALLAH!; he then declared:

"HE OF WHOM I AM THE MAWLA, OF HIM ALI IS ALSO THE MAWLA"

"من کنت مولا فهذا علي موله"

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) is acclaimed as the “Father of Sufism”. Almost all Sufi orders claim their descent from Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام).

• According to Hazrat Data Ali Hajveri (رضی اللہ), “The rank of Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) is very high in the lineup of Sufism”.

• According to Hazrat Junaid Bughdadi (رضی اللہ), Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) is the Shaikh as regards the principles and Practices of Sufism.

Once Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was asked whether he had seen Allah, he said that verily he had seen Allah because he could not worship Him without knowing Him. He was asked how he had seen Him, and he said that He had seen him with the inward eyes of the heart.

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) is known by various titles, some given due to his personal qualities and others due to events in his life:


Al MURTAZA (“The Chosen One")

AMEER UL MOMINEEN (“Commander of the Faithful Ones")

BAAB E MADINATUL ILM ("Door of City of the Knowledge")

ABU TURAB ("Father of the Soil")

ASADULLAH ("Lion of ALLAH")

HAYDER ("Braveheart" or "Lion")

WALAD AL KABAA ("The baby of Ka'ba")

On 19th Ramadan AH 40, which would correspond to 27th January 661, while praying in the Great Mosque of Kufa, Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was attacked by Ibn Maljam.

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) was wounded by ibn Muljam's poison-coated sword while prostrating in the Fajr prayer. Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) ordered his blessed sons not to attack him, instead stipulating that if he survived. Ibn muljam would be pardoned whereas if he died, ibn Muljam should be given only one equal hit (regardless of whether or not he died from the hit)

Hazrat Syedina Imam Ali (عليه السلام) returned from this mortal world two days later on 29th January 661 (21st Ramadan AH 40).
